Methodology
Resonate was guided by commitments to:
- making as few assumptions as possible;
- collecting demographic and qualitative data;
- asking participants to tell us about their own lived experiences as well as their concerns for women and/or individuals belonging to gender minorities as a broader group;
- encouraging participants to share in their own words and at their own comfort level;
- learning about challenges as well as potential solutions and positive experiences
- making space for experiences and concerns that are also shaped by race, ethnicity, language, sexual orientation, ability, income, etc.; and
- providing participants with information on how we would use, store and protect their data.
You can see our survey for women here, and our survey for gender minorities here. You can see our survey for women here and our survey for gender minorities here. You can see the workbook for our event with organizations here.
When using our findings, please keep in mind:
- that participants were able to skip or decline to answer questions they did not want to answer;
- more individuals provided demographic data than qualitative data;
- that most issues-related findings are based on qualitative data that has been reviewed, coded, and analyzed by the council and partners.
On gender diversity:
We recognize that gender is not a binary and we affirm that women includes individuals who are trans and cis gender.
While Resonate’s main focus was women, we also chose to make space to hear from individuals belonging to gender minorities who aren’t women.
Gender minorities include individuals who are trans, non-binary, agender, genderqueer, Two-Spirit, and much more.
We did this because individuals who belong to gender minorities, whether or not they are women, face challenges that are rooted in gender-based inequality and including them Resonate only strengthens this initiative.
To do this, we offered two versions of our online survey: one with women-focused language and one with language that was gender inclusive. Individuals were able to fill in whichever version of the survey they were comfortable with.
Archiving of Data
As of December 2022 (four years after our initial report-back on Resonate was released):
- The Women’s Council sent all hard-copies of primary data from this project (meaning survey responses, focus groups notes, event notes, and some analysis tools) to GNB’s Records Centre.
- All digital primary data from the project continues to be securely stored by the Women’s Council as per current GNB practice. The digital records are on a GNB server and only the executive director and office manager currently have access.
- No further analysis will be conducted on this primary data by the Women’s Council.
In 2033, a PANB Archivist will conduct an appraisal process to determine which materials will be retained by the Archives and which will be destroyed.

The New Brunswick Women’s Council is an independent government agency. We provide government with advice and raise public awareness about women’s equality.
